Google bags Yahoo Japan ad, search pact

Google has struck a deal with Japan's most popular website to provide it with search results and related advertising. The two companies, Yahoo Japan and Google announced the deal today.

With the agreement, Google would deliver search results via Yahoo Japan before the end of this year.

The deal runs counter to a 2009 agreement between Yahoo and Microsoft to use the latter's Bing search engine. Under the deal Yahoo's main US site and many of its international services are covered.

However, Yahoo Japan was not covered because Yahoo doesn't hold a majority stake in the company. The largest stake in Yahoo Japan is that of Softbank an early investor in Yahoo while the US company owns around 34 per cent.

According to Yahoo Japan, the agreement would not affect the financial relationship between it and Yahoo Inc.

The implementation would see Google's technology used for the vast majority of searches done from home and office PCs in Japan.
