Domain name registrations up 12 per cent in Jan-March 2009: VeriSign

The number of internet domain names registered across the world rose 12 per cent during the first quarter of 2009, taking the total to 180 million, US-based internet infrastructure services provider VeriSign said in a report.
In its first quarter 2009 `Domain name industry brief,'' VeriSign said India accounts for 1.4 million of the more than 180 million domain names registered globally.
At around 180 million, the domain name registration globally rose three per cent over the fourth quarter of 2008 and 12 per cent over the same quarter a year earlier, VeriSign said.
"Total base of domain names in India was 1.4 million as of 31 March, with about 8 lakh '.com' and '.net' domain names," the statement said.
During the quarter, an average of 2.4 million new '.com' and '.net' registrations were added each month, VeriSign said.
Country Code TLDs (ccTLDs) stood at 74.1 million domain names globally during the first quarter, up four per cent from the previous quarter and up 18 per cent from an year ago.
However, .com remains the most popular TLD category, followed by .cn (China), .de (Germany) and .net in that order, the report said.
The overall base of .com and .net domain names grew to 92.4 million domain names in the quarter – a rise of two per cent from Q4 2008 and a 9 per cent jump over the same quarter of the previous year, VeriSign said.
