Micromax launches Canvas 2 smartphone with free 4G from Airtel

Telecom major Bharti Airtel is offering one year free 4G service with unlimited calling within its network to buyers of Micromax Canvas 2 smartphone, which was launched yesterday.
"Micromax Canvas 2 will come with one year of unlimited Airtel to Airtel calling, unlimited data at no extra cost for both existing and new Airtel customers," Shubhajit Sen, chief marketing officer, Micromax told reporters in New Delhi.
The dual-SIM 4G VoLTE smartphone Canvas 2 for Rs11,999 marked Micromax's foray in the Rs 10,000-15,000 device segment.
According to Sen, under its pact with Airtel, the telecom firm will offer 1GB of 4G data every day.
Customers purchasing Canvas 2 will also be able to avail 400 minutes of calling per day to any network in India for a year with weekly limit of 1,500 minutes.
"We saw huge queues in front of the Reliance (Jio) stores when they launched 3 months free offer. For 1 year, we don't know what would be the response. After that three-month offer has become norm but for 1 year no one has seen the response," Micromax Informatics co-founder, Rahul Sharma said.
According to commentators, Micromax seemed to have taken inspiration from Nokia as the company launched a revamped version of one of its most successful phones - the Canvas 2, today in India.
The Micromax Canvas 2 will come "pre-bundled" with an Airtel 4G SIM card. But another noteworthy feature on the new Canvas 2 was the presence of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.
According to commentators, in the price range, Canvas 2 appeared to be the first smartphone to offer Gorilla Glass 5.
Micromax said it had partnered with Corning to make this possible. Micromax said in a statement: "Sporting a 2.5D Cover Glass with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the Canvas 2 gives up to 4 times better performance in drop failure height than other glasses. Equipped with improved drop performance and better retained strength, the device also offers a high standard of optical sharpness and protects against screen damage."
