India would exceed 200 million smart phone users by the year 2016, overtaking the US as the world's second-largest smart phone market after China, according to a report by research firm eMarketer.

According to new figures from eMarketer, the number of smart phone users worldwide would surpass 2 billion in 2016, nearly hitting the mark in 2015.

There would be more than 1.91 billion smart phone users across the globe, a figure that would increase another 12.6 per cent to near 2.16 billion in 2016, according to the report.

According to the company, inexpensive smart phones were opening up new opportunities for marketing and commerce in emerging markets where many consumers previously earlier had no access to the internet.

In developed markets, smart phones had triggered a shift in consumer media usage and impressed the need for marketers to become more mobile-centric.

For the first time, over a quarter of the global population would use smart phones in 2015 and by 2018, over one-third of consumers worldwide, or more than 2.56 billion people, would start using smart phones, according to eMarketer estimates.

Other interesting points in the eMarketer's report include:

  • 2014: Smart phone users in China would exceed 500 million for the first time.
  • 2015: Russia would overtake Japan as the fourth-largest smart phone user population.

Meanwhile, www.iamwire.com reported that the number of smart phone users in China was expected to reach over 700 million by 2018 and there would be 177 million new smart phone users in China between 2014 and 2018, which would see its smart phone user base jump from 38.3 per cent to 51.1 per cent of the total population.

According to the research, the number of Chinese smart phone users would increase to 574.2 million by next year, representing half of all mobile phone users in the country. About 77 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds and 74.6 per cent of 25- to 34-year-olds in the country would use a smart phone regularly this year and by 2018, 91.0 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds and about 89 per cent of 25- to 34-year-olds in the country would use a smart phone.

China was leading the smart phone race due to the size of its population, but the scene was not so good in India, which, despite of its population still lagged the US when it came to the number of smart phone users.
