ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel opens production line for automobile grade high-strength steel at Hazira

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has commissioned a cutting-edge Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) for producing Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) at its Hazira plant in Gujarat.
The new production will produce galvanised steel with strength levels of up to 1180 megapascals (MPa), which will cater to the evolving requirements of enhanced safety, durability, and lightweight components of the automobile sector and reduce the need for imports of high-grade steel.
AM/NS India is the first steelmaker in India capable of producing Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) up to 1180 MPa.
The company is currently implementing a Rs60,000-crore expansion and diversification programme that will increase its production and product portfolio in India. The programme involves setting up of new production lines for both downstream and upstream facilities.
The new production line at Hazira will be used for the production of galvanised (GI) and galvannealed (GA) coated steel sheets.
AM/NS will deploy technologies and licensed products from ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel for the production of high-forming, lightweight, and recyclable steel that would help reduce vehicle weight and emissions while also enhancing safety.
Besides producing high-end steel products matching global standards and supporting the government’s goals of self-reliance, the facility will meet advanced environmental and sustainability standards through use of technologies for waste heat recovery, energy control systems, and regenerative electric drives, according to AM/NS CEO, Dilip Oommen.
The expansion and diversification programme will take AM/NS India’s steel making capacity to 15 million tonnes per year from the present level of 9 million tonnes per annum. The company has targeted a long-term capacity of 24 MTPA.
Besides Hazira, AM/NS is implementing integrated steel projects in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The company is also pursuing a decarbonisation programme through increased use of renewable energy, fuel-efficient technologies, and low-emission steelmaking processes.
