According to The Banker magazines' annual survey, four UK-based banks figure in the top 15 in the list of biggest 1,000 global lenders.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) retains its position at the fourth place in terms of capital despite reporting the eighth largest loss in the world last year, to the tune of $4.37 billion. The bank is expected to return to profit in 2012, after it was bailed out of the financial crisis by a taxpayer investment.

HSBC came in at the fist spot and was declared the 16th most profitable in the world, while Barclays Bank- the fourth most profitable – was ranked the tenth in capital size. Lloyd's with 40.8 per cent taxpayer ownership emerged as the 12th largest.

The US, home to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, is the most powerful banking centre in the world, followed by the UK at the second spot, according the survey.

The Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the China Construction Bank and Goldman Sachs are the most profitable banks in the world according to the survey.
