MMRDA commences beautification of Mithi bank

Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), today aid that it has taken up the task of beautifying the Mithi river bank along the kilometre-long gabion wall.

While the first 300-meter stretch approaching completion, the project is expected to meet its deadline of May 2010, MMRDA said in a press release.

 According to the agency the Rs9.80-crore Mithi river project would offer facilities such jogging and walking tracks,  walkways, meditation and acupressure therapy platforms as a part of the Mithi beautification project.

''We will provide many facilities to the Bandra East residents through this first phase of Mithi beautification'', said Ratnakar Gaikwad, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.

''Besides beautifying the bank of the river with coconut, beetle nut, ficus benjamina and plumeria alba trees, there will be a Korean carpet lawn, which is a ready effect lawn with mounds and sitting arrangements. Considering the number of walkers and joggers in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, we have also included jogging and walking tracks in the entire set up.''

Coconut palms have been brought from Andhra Pradesh and transplanted with some of the trees having begun bearing fruit, Gaekwad said.

In addition, there will be plantation of hybrid hedges with colourful illumination with lights and Warali theme paintings on the wall, platforms for Meditation and Acupressure therapy for maintenance.
