Supreme Court restrains immediate action against 44 deemed universities

The Supreme Court today restrained the central government from taking immediate action against the 44 deemed universities identified for questionable academic performance or inadequate infrastructure (See: Centre to derecognise 44 deemed universities, affected students assured support).

While calling for maintaining the staus quo on the institutions a bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and AK Patnaik said that nothing would happen to the institutions and students while the court was seized of the matter.

The court made the observations following several law suits filed by the universities challenging the government's derecognition move.

The court has adjourned the case to 9 March.

In a separate case. a bench headed by Justice Dalveer Bhandari also told the central and state governments to constitute welfare boards for children to ensure their welfare.

The apex court which was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) told the authorities to ensure that the welfare of children including their proper education, food and clothing was properly taken care of.
