India’s grain stock tops 54.4 million tonnes

Foodgrain stock with government procurement agencies in the country stood at 54.43 million tones, comprising 33.18 million tonnes of rice and 21.25 million tonnes of wheat, as of 1 March 2012, an official release said today.

Rice procurement in the country, as of 1 March 2012 (KMS 2011-12), was 34.19 million tonnes against 32.12 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year. Wheat procurement for Rabi marketing season 2011-12 was 28.34 million tones, against 22.51 million tonnes procured last year.

The offtake of rice in all schemes, during March 2012 has been 2.63 million tonnes. This comprises 2.06 million tonnes under TPDS and 5.72 lakh tonnes under other schemes. Total off take of wheat has been 22.05 lakh tonnes comprising of 1.62 million tonnes under TPDS and 5.84 lakh tonnes under other schemes.

Total allotment of rice during March 2012, under TPDS, including BPL, APL and AAY, was 2.20 million tonnes, against which the total offtake was 2.06 million tonnes, representing an overall percentage offtake of 93.4 per cent.

The BPL allotment of rice was 9.70 lakh tonnes, against which the offtake was 9.40 lakh tonnes, representing an offtake 96.9 per cent.

In respect of AAY, the allotment during the month was 5.73 lakh tonnes, against which the off take was 5.54 lakh tonnes, which represents 96.7 per cent offtake. The total allotment of wheat under TPDS, including BPL, APL and AAY, was 1.96 million tonnes, against which the total off take was 1.62 million tonnes, representing an overall percentage 82.9 per cent offtake.

The BPL allotment of wheat was 4.85 lakh tonnes, against which the off take was 5.05 lakh tones, representing an offtake of 104 per cent. In respect of AAY, the allotment was 2.79 lakh tonnes, against which the off take was 2.58 lakh tonnes, which represents 92.5 percent offtake, the release added.
