ATMs in Mumbai will no longer be restricted to vending cash, with the arrival of purified water vending machines, thanks to a first-of-its kind initiative by a non-profit group Vandana Foundation, PTI reported.

Mumbai residents can now buy filtered water at an affordable price of Rs1 per litre, from 'AQUATM', a water vending machine.

"The ATM can vend up to 1,000 litres per day... The water from AQUATM will be available to consumers at the price of Re 1 per litre," the Foundation said in a statement.

Vandana Foundation had joined hands with another non-profit group Aquakraft for the effort.

The vending machine has been installed at Mankhurd, a Mumbai suburb with persistent water contamination problems.

The machine can be operated with prepaid cards.
