UK ad body bans BT broadband advertisement over false speed claim
26 Aug 2010
UK's independent advertising regulator, Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned an advertisement of telecommunications company, BT for claiming false broadband speeds in the ad.
The authority ruled against the advertisement as it didn't find sufficient evidence to support BT's claim and deemed the ad misleading.
BT had claimed in its TV ad of offering broadband speeds of 20MB even during peak hours through a voice over. The same message was carried in BT's print and radio advertisements.
The ad, a continuation of its Adam and Jane series, showed Adam being shown properties by an estate agent and discussing them with Jane.
The estate agent is then shown attempting to access a website and complaining about peak hour traffic while at the same time Jane is shown accessing the same websites at home at incredible speeds.
ASA had received 17 complaints about the ad from public as well as competitors Sky and Virgin. The complainants argued that the speeds shown in the ad were not possible at any connection speed amongst other reasons.
