'Food poverty' had hit an estimated 10 per cent of  UK citizens in the past year, according to a new research. It showed over half of those seeking help had gone without food for 48 hours.

The Salisbury charity and the Trussell Trust had enlisted the help of Tesco, the biggest retailer in the UK, to launch a massive food collection effort at over 800 supermarkets across the country.

More and more people were finding themselves in need of help to feed their families, and nationally the foodbanks fed almost 110,000 people in the last six months, as against 128,697 people in the whole of last year. C

hris Mould, executive chairman of Trussell Trust said, across the UK, the trust's foodbanks was seeing thousands of people in crisis turn to it for help.

He said every day they met parents who were skipping meals to feed their children, or people who were forced to choose between eating and heating.

He added, this winter was looking particularly bleak as food and energy prices continued to rise while incomes remained static.
