The ubiquitous razor will never be the same again, with a new razor, called Skarp Razor which uses a laser instead of a blade, set to hit the market.

Skarp Technologies' Kickstarter campaign launched on 21 September, and only two days later, reached its goal of $160,000 and even after funding had reached $790,612 as of today it showed not sign of stopping.

Besides the obvious cuts and nicks, irritation and other negatives, the conventional razor also had a significant environmental impact.

According to the EPA the US alone threw out 2 billion razors a year which could not be recycled due to health risks and ended up in garbage dumps continuing to take up space with other waste.

Skarp Technologies founders, Morgan Gustavsson and Paul Binun  addressed the issuewith a razor that would not cause irritation, shaved smoothly and helped reduce waste.

Skarp cuts through hair due to a molecule called chromophore, the only continuous structure in hair shared by every human regardless of age, gender or race.

The chromophores are cut when hit with a particular light wavelength, with the laser melting the hair shaft right at the surface of the skin, so the roughness caused by traditional razors, which cut at an angle, would no longer pose a problem.

According to Skarp, the razor would be ''powered by a small laser which cuts through hair for an incredibly close shave'' which eliminated a lot of the annoying things associated with shaving, including razor burn, bleeding, itching and infection. Also the razor does not require any water, it can be just turned on to mow off all facial hair with ease.

According to Skarp's estimates it would start shipping its laser razors in March 2016.
