Nine scientists named for Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award

Professor Sandeep Verma of the Indian Institute of Technology- Kanpur (IIT-K) has been named for the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology 2010 for his outstanding contribution to the field of drug design.

Verma (44) is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at IIT-K since 1997 with noteworthy achievements in the field of development of artificial chemicals for modeling of biological proteins.

The artificial chemicals he has developed have proved instrumental in the identification of the underlying causes of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

India's highest scientific aawards, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, were first awarded in 1958.

Verma told The Indian Express that he considered the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award as a major achievement in his life and it would vastly boost his efforts.

The Kanpur-born scientist did his schooling from Varanasi where he studied organic chemistry at Banaras Hindu University.
