Thrissur: Kerala has the potential to generate 600-mw hydroelectric power through small and mini projects, says Steel Industrials Kerala (SILK) managing director T C Khalid. "Small and mini projects within 500 kw can be erected and commissioned within 24 months at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore."

Khalid said for their captive use, many companies in Kerala are willing to invest in small and mini hydroelectric projects by availing various schemes of subsidies offered by the Union government and other agencies for such projects. "Being very small projects, the Kerala State Electricity Board may not be interested in the execution of such projects."

But SILK, which has technical collaborations with well-known international firms in the field of hydro-equipment, can take up such projects on a turnkey basis, he says.
