Mumbai crime reporter gunned down; killers escape

Jyotirmoy DeyJyotirmoy Dey, a senior Mumbai crime reporter working with MiD-DAY, was shot dead in broad daylight today by four unidentified persons.

According to police, four men riding on two motorcycles fired at least five bullets at Jyotirmoy (Jyoti) Dey (56) in suburban Powai area this afternoon. Dey was rushed to the Hiranandani Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

"About nine entry-exit wounds were found, which means at least 5 bullets were fired", Vishwas Nagare Patil, additional commissioner, Special Branch, Mumbai Police, said.

Dey (56), who was working as editor (special investigations) for the paper, had extensively covered underworld and crime for over two decades. He had earlier worked with The Hindustan Times and The Indian Express, and was considered one of the best-connected writers on the Mumbai underworld.

Dey has authored two books, Zero Dial: The Dangerous World of Informers and Khallas, considered a dictionary of the Mumbai underworld.

Dey also wrote extensively about fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim, Chotta Rajan and others. He was reportedly working on a series on Ibrahim.
