K SubrahmanyamNew Delhi: K Subrahmanyam, the grand old man of India's strategic affairs, is no more. Having recovered from cancer Subrahmanyam fell victim to lung and cardiac problems from which he failed to recover. He was 82.

He had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

An internationally acclaimed voice on global security affairs, Subrahmanyam was heading the prime minister's Task Force on Global Strategic Developments at the time of his death.

A former civil servant, Subrahmanyam transited to becoming a prominent international strategic affairs analyst and journalist whose voice was the most influential in Indian security affairs. Widely regarded as a hawk in security matters he was also the most influential advocate of India's defence nuclear policy.

He was a key figure in framing and influencing Indian security and nuclear policy and in advocating Indian nuclear positions on the global stage.

He was also the founding director of the New Delhi-based Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, which gained renown as the foremost policy think tank in the India sub-continent.
