Ashok Chawla appointed finance secretary

Ashok Chawla, who is currently secretary at the department of economic affairs of the ministry of finance, has been appointed finance secretary. He has also been given additional charge of the department of financial services since 1 May 2009, a government release said today.

Chawla, a 1973 batch IAS (Gujarat Cadre) official, has been secretary, department of economic affairs since September 2008 and has also worked as additional secretary of the DEA from April 2005 to January 2007.

Prior to joining the DEA, Chawla was secretary, ministry of civil aviation from February 2007 to September 2008.

Chawla, an MA (Economics) from Delhi School of Economics, has held various important portfolios in the field of economy, industry, chemicals and fertilizers, oil and natural gas, insurance and infrastructure, the release said.

The post of secretary (financial services) has been downgraded to the rank of additional secretary after the retirement of finance secretary (also secretary financial services) Arun Ramanathan on 30 April 2009 and GC Chaturvedi was appointed additional secretary, department of financial services, the release added.
