Ashok Chawla appointed secretary, department of economic affairs

Ashok Chawla has been appointed as secretary, department of economic affairs in the ministry of finance, according to an official statement released by the appointments committee of the cabinet.
Chawla was earlier additional secretary, economic affairs, from April 2005 to January 2007. He is expected to take charge from tomorrow, according to government sources.
Currently, Arun Ramanathan, secretary, financial services in the finance ministry, is temporarily holding the additional charge of the secretary of the conomic affairs department DEA.
The post was lying vacant following the appointment of secretary, DEA, D Subbarao as governor of the Reserve Bank of India on 5 September. Arun Ramanathan was given the additional charge of DEA as he was the senior most secretary in the finance ministry.
The committee also appointed M Madhavan Nambiar as the civil aviation secretary. Nambiar was the special secretary, department of information technology.
The finance ministry has five secretaries, including revenue secretary PV Bhide and financial services secretary Arun Ramanathan along with disinvestment secretary Vivek Mehrotra and expenditure secretary Sushma Nath.
Rahul Sarin has been appointed secretary to the department of personnel and training, while retaining the additional charge of his existing post of secretary, ministry of food processing industries. Rajni Razdan, secretary, department of pensions & pensioners' welfare, has been relieved of additional charge of the post of personnel secretary.
