Alan Greenspan, the chairman of the US Federal Reserve for 18 years, who retired yesterday after a fairly successful tenure, was today appointed advisor to the UK government. However, he will not receive any remuneration in his advisory capacity.

His appointment was announced by Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer, just hours after Greenspan handed the baton to his successor, Ben Berannke, chairman of the council of economic advisors at the White House.

In his new role as advisor to the UK Treasury, Greenspan would develop its thinking in areas relating to global economic change, participate in meetings and exchanges of papers.

The retired Fed chief has also launched his consulting firm, Greenspan Associates.
