Boston: Vikram Sheel Kumar (29) Harvard Medical School physician, who used information technology to bring medical diagnostics to underdeveloped countries in Africa and Asia has been included among the ten winners of this year''s Outstanding Young American awards, presented by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Kumar is a pathology resident at Brigham and Women''s Hospital in Boston and runs a venture, Dimagi, whose chief customers are non-profit third world health agencies.

With software co-developed by Dimagi, nurses in India manage information collected in the field on more than 70,000 patients. And in rural South Africa, outreach workers use software that Dimagi helped develop to distribute HIV test results in remote settings while ensuring confidentiality.
