Draupadi Murmu on Monday took the oath as the 15th President of India, at the Central Hall of Parliament, in a grand ceremony attended by PM Narendra Modi and other dignitaries.
Chief Justice of India NV Ramana administered the oath of office Draupadi Murmu, the first tribal and the second woman to become the President of India.
Addressing the nation after the swearing in, Droupadi Murmu said she was honoured to take charge at a time India is completing 75 years of Independence. She added that she was the first President to be born in independent India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Murmu’s swearing-in ceremony is a “watershed moment for India, especially for the poor, marginalised and downtrodden,” and wished the President good luck.
“In her address after taking oath, President Droupadi Murmu gave a message of hope and compassion,” Modi added.
Murmu, in her address, said, “Reaching the presidential post is not my personal achievement, it is the achievement of every poor in India. My election is evidence that the poor in India can not just dream but also fulfil those dreams.”
After the Swearing in Draupadi Murmu, as the supreme commander of the armed forces, also received her first guard of honour at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Murmu is the first tribal woman to hold the highest constitutional post in the country. Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath to Murmu in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, S Jaishankar, Amit Shah, among others.
A former governor of Jharkhand and a nominee of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, Draupadi Murmu assumed presidency defeating her opponent Yashwant Sinha by a huge margin.
Born in the Santhali tribe community of a village in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, Draupadi Murmu entered public life as a school teacher and then as a government clerk.
She joined politics in 1997 with Bhartiya Janata Party and was elected a councilor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat, and in 2000, she became the chairman.
She also served as the national vice president of BJP Schedule Tribes Morcha.
Murmu, who hails from Odisha and was also a minister in the BJD-BJP alliance government in the state.
Draupadi Murmu was appointed governor of Jharkhand in May 2015. She was the first female governor of Jharkhand.
Orissa chief minister Navin Patnaik congratulated Murmu on her thumping victory in the presidential election and wished her all the best.
