TRAI chops roaming rates to Rs2.40 per minute

Telecom regulator TRAI today slashed roaming rates by 22 per cent to a maximum of of Rs2.40 per minute for outgoing national long distance calls.

It has also put a ceiling of Rs1.40 per minute for local outgoing calls while roaming.

The ceiling on roaming charges will come in to effect from 15 February 2007.

Telecom service providers had opposed TRAI's move to bring down the roaming rates on the grounds that the roaming rates helped compensate for the low local call rates, a contention that did not find favour with the regulator.

TRAI has also removed all surcharges and rent during roaming period.
