Browse the Net on your cell phone

Browsing the Internet on a mobile phone is in itself something new. But now, with the introduction of several browser options, it seems to have become an optimal way to browse the Net.

Want to know how?

The mobile browser usually connects with the help of the cellular network, or increasingly via wireless LAN, using standard HTTP over TCP/IP and displays web pages written in HTML, XHTML Mobile Profile, or WML. WML and HDML are stripped-down formats suitable for transmission across limited bandwidth, and wireless data connection called WAP.

In Japan, DoCoMo defined the i-mode service based on i-mode HTML, which is an extension of Compact HTML (C-HTML), a simple subset of HTML.

WAP 2.0 specifies XHTML Mobile Profile plus WAP CSS, subsets of the W3C's standard XHTML and CSS with minor mobile extensions.

Newer microbrowsers are full-featured Web browsers capable of HTML, CSS, ECMAScript, as well as mobile technologies such as WML, i-mode HTML, or cHTML.

A mobile browser, or a microbrowser or mini browser, is a browser designed for use on devices like mobile phones or PDAs. Mobile browsers today are so well optimised that they display all possible content on a small screen. Today's mobile browsers can also handle the latest technologies and show them on mobile handsets.

Distinct from a mobile browser is a Web-based emulator, which uses a 'virtual handset' to display WAP pages on a computer screen, implemented either in Java or as an HTML transcoder. These browsers include Wapjag, TT, Waptiger and Superwap.

These browsers connect through the cellular network and also via WiFi. You can view pages which are written in HTML, XHTML OR WML.

Browsers like Opera use the 'small screen rendering' (SSR) and 'medium screen rendering' (MSR) technology. Opera has used the technology to fit regular websites in small screens.

Browsers have lately been able to support the AJAX approach to online software while browsing the Net on the mobile phone.

A few popular minibrowsers are user-installable micro-browsers such as Opera Mobile, Opera Mini, Minimo, Doris, Pixo and WebbyMobile.
