Generally known for their hard drives - internal and portable - Western Digital is making a foray into the personal entertainment segment with their WD TV HD media player.

WD TV HD media playerCombined with a 'my passport' portable drive, or any other mass storage device like a USB drive, digital camera, camcorder etc, this player is the most convenient way to play HD movies or user-generated videos, listen to high-quality digital music and view high-resolution slideshows of your family photos on your TV.

You get full HD video playback and navigation - up to 1080p – thanks to HDMI connectivity and, for less sophisticated sets, there is the composite output. The inbuilt remote control enables you to navigate through your entertainment choices using crisp, animated HD menus – you can browse through your content using thumbnail or list views or view them all in the media library. This feature also lets you browse through 2 USB drives, connected separately, at the same time!

You can create slide shows of your photos, and fast forward, rewind, zoom and pan while watching movies. There is also a memory function, which remembers the point where you stopped viewing a movie.

rear viewIn the rare event that your media is in a format not supported by the player, the bundled ArcSoft media converter 2.5, easily and quickly converts the files into a compatible format. The only downside is that this software works only with Windows (Sorry Mac users!).

Currently, retailing at around $100, this is a great addition to your home entertainment system.
