Japan's NTT Communications Corp (NTT Com) is planning to acquire two US cloud computing firms for up to 100 billion yen ($1 billion) combined, Reuters yesterday reported, citing a source.

NTT Com, the global, unlisted data and IP services arm of Fortune Global 500 telecom company Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp, will buy Denver, Colorado-based Virtela Technology Services Inc, and an unidentified firm, details of which, Reuters said, it could could not obtain.

Virtela offers a suite of services, including managed networks, security, application acceleration, cloud-based mobile device management, and IT infrastructure management in more than 190 countries through local partnerships.

Its services are offered through its Virtualized Overlay Network and Enterprise Services Cloud (ESC) platform, with Local Cloud Centers (LCCs) strategically located around the world, which eliminates the complexity and expense of having multiple networking devices at each customer branch office.

NTT Coms provides consultancy, architecture, security and cloud services to optimise the information and communications technology environments of enterprises.

Its services are backed through its worldwide infrastructure, including global tier-1 IP network, Arcstar Universal One VPN network reaching 160 countries, and over 140 secure data centers.
