Nifty ends flat amid volatility; metal, realty, auto cracks

At 15.41 hrs IST, the Nifty ended flat with marginal gains. It was yet another choppy session for the markets. The Nifty was broadly trading in a range of 80 points.
The Sensex ended up 40.20 points or 0.24% at 16875.76, and the Nifty closed up 6.30 points or 0.12% at 5066.20. About 1688 shares advanced, 1242 shares declined, and 356 shares were unchanged.
The markets opened subdued and then made a remarkable recovery with the Nifty touching 5100 during the day. However, selling pressure crept in around that level and dragged the Nifty back in the red before closing flat at 5066.
The total turnover for the day stood at Rs 111854.27 crore. NSE F&O contributed Rs 94575.29 crore to total turnover. NSE Cash recorded turnover of Rs 12873.32 crore while BSE Cash recorded Rs 4405.66 crore turnover.
The BSE Metal index shut shop at 15565, down close to 2%. The realty and auto index too lost nearly 0.5%. The capital goods index outperformed for the second day in a row. L&T was the major driver of the capital goods index. Buying was also seen in consumer durables, FMCG and oil&gas stocks.
Asian markets too exhibited volatility in trade. European markets opened in the green and held onto those gains. CAC was up 1%. DAX was up 0.8% while FTSE was up 0.5%. The Dow Futures were up 11 points at 10610.
