Hacker group Anonymous attacks US security think-tank Stratfor
26 Dec 2011
The activist hacker group Anonymous claims to have pilfered thousands of emails, passwords and credit card details from US security think-tank Stratfor. It said it was able to lay its hands on the information as it was not encrypted by Stratfor.
According to Anonymous, Stratfor counts a number of important US agencies among its clients including the US defence department, law enforcement agencies and media organisations.
Austin-based Startfor has now suspended the operation on its servers and email, the think-tank said in a statement.
An alleged Anonymous member, said in an online message the group had made donations of "over a million dollars" to different charities using the credit card details of Stratfor clients.
Stratford said it would keep its email and servers suspended for some time.
Stratford also said that the disclosure constituted only a list of some of the members that had purchased its publications and did not comprise a list of individuals or entities that had a relationship with Stratfor.
