China rejects Deep Panda connections

China yesterday dismissed as a publicity gimmick the claims by US security firm, CrowdStrike that a group of hackers called "Deep Panda" was linked to Chinese government officials.

Reuters quoted Geng Shuang, press counselor for China's embassy in Washington as saying in response to its questions that Chinese laws prohibited cyber crimes of all forms, and the Chinese government had done whatever it could to combat such activities.

On Monday, CrowdStrike said a highly sophisticated group of hackers believed to be associated with the Chinese government, who for years targeted US experts on Asian geopolitical matters, had suddenly started breaching computers belonging to experts on Iraq, with the escalation of the rebellion there.

According to the security firm, which employs a number of former US government officials, it had ''great confidence'' that Deep Panda was affiliated with the Chinese government. It however declined to elaborate.

The group, according to Crowdstrike, had long targeted think-tank specialists on Asian affairs, though, it suddenly started extracting documents from the computers of Iraqi experts last month, following the Islamic insurgency gaining strength and attacking a refinery.

CrowdStrike co-founder Dmitri Alperovitch said Chinese officials had apparently decided not to confirm or deny any allegations, including those in a recent unprecedented Justice Department indictment.

He added for China, it was no longer the art of war, it was the art of denial. He added it was clear by now that there was no level of proof that was sufficient.
