China’s ZTE plans branded foray into Indian phone mart

China's ZTE Corp, the world's fourth largest handset maker, has launched its smartphones in India for the first time, introducing six phones under its own brand name.

ZTE India has been supplying its handsets to other Indian manufacturers for some years; now it is preparing to become a brand in itself.

In the next six months ZTE will spend some Rs30 crore on marketing and branding, with the aim of growing to a million units a year and capturing 20-25 per cent of the high-end smartphone market share in the country.

''In the first year, we will just demonstrate the products and introduce new devices in India. Going ahead, we are sure that we will have a 20-25 per cent share of the smartphone segment in the next 3-4 years, given the quality and features of our products,'' ZTE India vice president (handsets) Yuan Kang said at a presentation in New Delhi on Friday.

 ''We will build further on our handset portfolio in the months to come. By the year-end, we aim to have a pan-India presence with the smartphones,'' added Xu Dejun, CEO of ZTE India.
