SC stays TDSAT's order of lifting cap on SMSes

The Supreme Court today stayed an order of the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), which had quashed an earlier regulation by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) that limited the number of SMSes to 200 per day per SIM.
A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi passed the order on an appeal filed by TRAI challenging tribunal's order.
TDSAT had passed the order on a plea by Aditya Thackeray, son of Shiv Sena chief Udhav Thackeray and grandson of Sena founder late Bal Thackeray against the TRAI regulation.
The SC bench stayed the tribunal's order and issued notices to TDSAT and Aditya Thackeray, on whose plea TDSAT had passed the order.
The apex court also asked Thackeray to respond to the regulator's plea within six weeks.
With today's stay order, the sector regulator can enforce the circular till the apex court vacates its stay on the TDSAT verdict.
