The Income Tax department has been asked to prepare transcripts of the telephone conversations of Niira Radia it taped while probing charges of illegal amassing of wealth by the former corporate lobbyist.

The Supreme Court said today that a number of the intercepted calls had security implications because of dubious financial transactions and foreign connections involved.

The apex court had given the I-T department two months for submission of transcripts of 5,800 telephone conversations.

The apex court was hearing a petition of Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, who sought to restrain the media from publishing the transcripts of the Radia tapes as it violated his right to privacy.

Radia's conversation with various business leaders and politicians were recorded on the complaint of the finance ministry, some of which found their way into the media. The leaked tapes led to the exposure of the 2G spectrum scam.

The direction came today with the court telling additional solicitor general A S Chandhok that the I-T department had not transcribed the tapes but only heard them.
