Government withdraws 2G review petition in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court today accepted the government's request to withdraw its review petition filed against the apex court's judgement in relation to the 2G spectrum scam.
The government had initially filed the petition for clarity on the judgment, but conveyed its intention to withdraw it earlier this week. It had also filed a presidential reference in the case (See: 2G: Is auction of resources compulsory, President asks SC).
The apex court granted withdrawal of the petition on the oral request of additional solicitor general Indira Jaising.
However, the apex court expressed its displeasure at the government for circulating a letter to the Chief Justice of India, instead of making a request before the court.
A letter was sent on May 8 to the parties linked to the matter, saying an application would be moved on May 10 for withdrawing the petition seeking review of the 2 February judgement.
On 13 April the Supreme Court had admitted the government's plea seeking review of its 2G ruling that spectrum should be allotted to private companies only through "auction".
