India adds 9.20 million new subscribers in December to take mobile user base to 893.84 million

Indian telecom operators added 9.20 million new users in December 2011, taking the total subscriber base to an impressive 926.53 million, buoyant on mobile user base that rose to 893.84 million.

The addition in December was an impressive 1 per cent  to the total 917.33 million users in 30 November 2011, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

With this, the country's overall tele-density - number of telephone connections per 100 people - rose to 76.86 during the month under review from 76.18 posted in November, while overall wireless tele-density grew to 74.15.

The country's total wireless subscriber base rose to 893.84 million in December, registering a 1.07 growth from 884.37 million in recorded during the same period a year ago.

Private operators hold 88.54 per cent  of the wireless market share where as state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) hold the remaining 11.46 per cent  market share.

As on December 31, 29.24 million users submitted their requests for porting their mobile numbers, taking the total users seeking change in operator (but retaining their numbers) to 3.4 million.
