DoT slaps Rs1,637-cr notice on five telcos
01 Feb 2012
The department of telecommunications (DoT) on Tuesday issued show-cause notices to five telecom operators - Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications, and Tata Teleservices - for under-reporting revenues between the assessment years of 2006-08.
It has asked them to collectively pay up Rs1,637 crore to settle the dues.
The DoT, under the telecom ministry, has given the private telecom operators 21 days' time to respond to the notices.
Spokespersons for Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices confirmed that the companies had got the show-cause notice, but declined to comment on the issue.
Vodafone said in a statement that it follows the highest standards of accounting discipline and compliance norms.
''The special audit that was conducted in 2010 has rightly observed that our revenue accounting practices were in line with the accounting standards. There was no instance of any diversion of revenues to non-licence fee categories. We are confident that there is no additional fee liability for the period under audit,'' the company said.
