2G: Swamy to get Chidambaram-Raja file tomorrow

The special CBI court looking into cases related to the 2G spectrum allocation issue on Tuesday told the Central Bureau of Investigation to provide a certified copy of the file containing correspondence between home minister P Chidambaram and former telecom minister Andimuthu Raja to petitioner Subramanian Swamy within two days; which the investigating agency undertook to do.

The Janata Party president has been trying to implicate Chidambaram, the finance minister in 2008 when the alleged scam took place, in the imbroglio relating to the cheap sale of spectrum in 2008.

He had alleged before the court on 15 November that the CBI was deliberately holding back the correspondence between Chidambaram and the jailed ex-telecom minister, and asked for the files to be released. (See: 2G: lid to come off Raja-Chidambaram correspondence)

Special judge O P Saini had granted his request; but on Tuesday Swamy said the CBI had still not handed over the file.

Swamy asked the judge why the probe agency was not giving him a copy of the file when it is already in the court records. He also expressed a fear that the documents could be tampered with.

"A week before this, the court had passed an order directing CBI to give the certified copy of the file to me. But CBI has still not handed over the file," said Swamy.

The file, according to Swamy, was seized by the agency two years ago. "These documents, with the endorsements and signatures of Chidambaram, prove his complicity in the instant scam," he had alleged.

Senior public prosecutor A K Singh told the court that the CBI would give the copy of the file to Swamy by Thursday.
