CBI's 2G scam probe nears dead end

The Central Bureau of Investigations, India's top investigating agency, today told the Supreme Court that it has completed Investigations into the 2008 2G spectrum allocation scam.
The CBI also opposed pleas by scam-accused to investigate the role of union home minister P Chidambaram in the whole affairs.
The CBI, which could not so far establish the money trail in the case of Unitech and the alleged Swan-Reliance ties, has been further hampered in its investigations by contradictory statements issued by the various government ministries and departments.
Nor could the agency establish the scam-accused telecom minister Raja's active involvement in the misallocation of precious radio spectrum and telecom licencees jumping the queue.
The trial court has, meanwhile, asked CBI to produce a letter written by the law ministry to the telecom department that contradicts the agency's findings on Swan Telecom.
The CBI, in its chargesheet, has described Swan as a front for Reliance, which the latter used to corner more spectrum, while also stating that Swan telecom was granted 2G licence despite being ineligible.
