The Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) at Kalpakkam has been put on high alert as the cyclone Nilam pushed into the Tamil Nadu and Andhra coast.

Kalpakkam being a coastal site all the structures and equipment are designed to withstand wind velocities of 160 km/hr. However, they said, all agencies have been given instructions for remedial measures and are on standby alert. Additional personnel have been deployed to keep a vigil on important systems.

The situation is being watched closely for any development and to take immediate appropriate action, says a release issued by MAPS.

"We have taken necessary precautions against power outage and measures to clear the trees that may fall across the roads. We do not expect any flooding of our facilities due to the cyclone," reports quoting Prabhat Kumar, chairman and managing director at Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (Bhavini) said.

Authorities at MAPS said its two reactors are operating safely.

The meteorological department has asked the Chennai Port to maintain high alert as the severe cyclone was set to cross the coast between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai.
