TN government consents to Kudankulam plant construction

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet today gave its approval to continue the construction of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. Chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced the decision after a meeting with her cabinet colleagues, allowing work on the stalled 2,000-MW atomic power project to restart.
The cabinet nod came after an expert panel appointed by the state government submitted its report to the chief minister on 29 February, vouching for the safety of the plant.
The review of security arrangements was a precursor to government action to resolve the seven-month standoff between the local people and the Koodankulam project administration.
The chief minister also announced a Rs500-crore allocation for the development of areas in and around Kudankulam.
Jayalilathaa, meanwhile, said concerns of the local people would be addressed before the project is implemented.
With the state government clearing the project, power from the 2000-MW project in Tamil Nadu should start flowing within a month.
