India and Iran have agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of renewable energy even as the two countries would use their full potential to enhance overall economic cooperation and bilateral ties.

This was announced after a meeting of union minister for renewable energy Dr Farooq Abdullah with Iranian President Mehmoud Ahmadinejad, in Tehran.

Earlier in the day, Dr Abdullah met Iran's energy minister Majid Namjou, who evinced interest in developing renewable energy sources in cooperation with India.

Dr Abdullah outlined the progress India had made in generating power through use of renewable energies, especially wind and solar.

He also highlighted the progress of India's National Solar Mission, which has resulted in significant increase in installed capacity and an almost 40 per cent fall in costs.

He also had bilateral meetings with the Governor-General of Shirazi Hossein Sadegh Abedin, and governor-general of Isfahan Dr Alireza Zakar Esfahani.
