UK firm proposes to generate electricity from Bangalore’s waste

A UK firm has become the latest company to evince interest in power generation from Bangalore's waste. Green Homes Energy Private Limited in association with Bangalore-based Rushe Infratek joined a list of several foreign companies to visit the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) following a presentation it made via video-conferencing from London, yesterday.
The company's team presented a proposal for using the garbage generated by the city to produce power.
According to the company's Mike Hinney, who spoke via video-conferencing from London, the company would generate 65 MW from 3,000 MT of garbage. He added this would eliminate the need for a landfill as the bulk of the garbage would be used to generate power.
Elaborating on the new technology, the company said there was no need to store garbage as the technology would burn the garbage to generate electricity, thus making it environmentally friendly.
Hinney added that the Rs3,000-crore project required 6-10 acres of land. He said the company would need only an assurance from the city municipality that all garbage would be delivered and that the state government would buy back the generated power.
Meanwhile, the councillors and the Begaluru municipal commissioner and councillors have asked for alternatives that would help BBMP generate revenue from the proposal.
