The stage has been set for the development of a huge tidal project in the UK with the authorities awarding rights to a site in the Pentland Firth to a consortium led by Crown Estate.

The project would involve generating energy from up to 400 submerged turbines to power 400,000 homes.

A 25-year operational lease for the site has been awarded to MeyGen. The project is a joint venture between tidal technology provider Atlantis Resources Corporation, International Power and investment bank Morgan Stanley.

The project will come up at Inner Sound between the Island of Stroma and the mainland of Caithness in Northern Scotland.

The firm undertook feasibility work in the Pentland Firth waters spanning two years before the award of the lease

Subject to planning consent, the consortium has plans to install hundreds of turbines in the area known as Inner Sound.
