Chinese manufacturers have also secured orders for 464 MW of equipment out of total orders of about 15000 MW for hydro power projects, minister of state for heavy industries and public enterprises Arun Yadav informed the Lok Sabha today.

The inflow of cheap imported power equipment from China has been posing a threat to the domestic players such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), he pointed out.

In the 12th plan period, out of total orders of about 45,000 MW placed so far, orders for thermal capacity of about 14,000 MW have been placed on Chinese manufacturers / suppliers, he said.

BHEL has booked orders from international markets worth Rs1,903 crore, Rs2,312 crore and Rs3,265 crore, respectively, for export of projects, products, spares and services in the financial years 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09, the minister said.

He said the department of heavy industry is continuously reviewing and monitoring the functioning and performance of BHEL with a view to make further improvements.

The company is equipping itself by way of technology, augmentation facilities and processes, forming joint venture and strategic alliances and inducting manpower to meet the country's power forecast for the 11th plan and beyond.

BHEL has already enhanced its manufacturing capacity to 10,000 MW per annum, he said, adding that plans are also afoot to hike it further to 20,000 MW by 2011-12.
