The South Asia Gas Enterprise (SAGE) deepwater pipeline for transporting natural gas from the Gulf region to India, across the Indian ocean, is feasible.

Speaking at the 13th annual Middle East gas summit in Doha yesterday Peter Roberts, technical director, SAGE, said, the economics of the deepwater pipeline system were attractive and the risks demonstrably low.

Till the mid-90s the depth of the Indian Ocean along the proposed pipeline route was considered uneconomic for laying pipelines.

Subsequent to the development of the enabling technology and deepwater design practice code being issued in the mid-90s, the pipeline had become viable and since then pipes have been laid in deeper and were now up being laid at depths of around 3000 metre, the oil and gas industry moved into new areas further offshore, Roberts said.

Saying this was a project whose time had come, Roberts said the target installation date for the SAGE pipeline, at the turn of the decade will see the industry working at depths beyond the 3,500 metre that the SAGE line reaches.
