NRIs are being wrongly clubbed with FIIs in the stock markets for detemining the total investment limit in any company, according to industry chamber Assocham.

There was also a need to simplify NRI investment regulations as these are cumbersome, complex and archaic, the association pointed out.

Assocham president Sajjan Jindal said that clubbing of NRIs with FIIs deprives NRIs investment opportunites in companies even when the markets are depressed.

The chamber also called for allowing NRIs to trade in the futures and options segment in line with FIIs. The present practice, according to the chamber, is dicriminatory as it denies an opportunity to Indian diaspora.

While commending on the various measures taken recently, the association called for a more proactive and imaginative approach toward revisiting certain existing regulations and processes in the capital and currency markets.
