11 Dec 2009
The All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), representing about 600,000 bank employees in the country, plans to go on a day's strike on 16 December to protest the move to merge state-owned banks.
The employees have voiced their protest against the ongoing move to merge State Bank of Indore with its parent State Bank of India.
C H Venkatachalam, general secretary of AIBEA, said his union was against any move for merger and consolidation in the banking industry as it amounted to "closure of a bank".
State-run Corporation Bank also informed stock exchanges that normal functioning in bank branches might be affected owing to the strike.
The Indian Banks Association (IBA), the apex organisation of banks in the country, had earlier said it got a notice from All India Bank Officers' Association and AIBEA on the planned strike by its members in state-owned, private and foreign banks on 16 December.
State-run Corporation Bank also informed stock exchanges normal functioning in bank branches might be affected owing to the strike.
