Abdullah wants private sector to embrace green culture

Union minister of new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah has called upon the private sector, especially builders in the real estate business, to adopt green norms in all new constructions, in order to mitigate the effects of green house gas emissions.
Delivering a special address at the `National Conference on Green Design: Buildings and Habitats' in New Delhi today, the minister said new educational institutes such as IITs and IIMs are registered with GRIHA to make green educational campuses.
He said he would be meeting some of the leading developers to seek their cooperation in achieving energy security and ecological security through green and sustainable construction activities.
He said most of the construction in terms of numbers is happening in smaller places where transformation is only possible through inspiration.
"I am glad to learn that TERI is coming up with a simple version of GRIHA that helps individuals like you and me to make out new homes green and sustainable," the minister added.
He said his ministry was committed to making renewable energy competitive with fossil fuel-based energy, which is a real challenge. Buildings can play a great role in reducing the energy demand and increasing the adoption of off-grid renewable energy technologies, he added.
