Pakistani authorities have sent a formal request to Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, currently living in self-exile outside Pakistan.

The step has been taken to allow his arrest and return to the country to face trial in connection with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

The Federal Investigation Agency yesterday sent the request to the director of Interpol in Pakistan, according to official sources.

FIA special prosecutor Mohammad Azhar Chaudhry confirmed to the media that the process to bring Musharraf back to Pakistan had started.

Last week, interior minister Rehman Malik announced that the government would get Musharraf back to face trial for allegedly failing to provide security to former premier Benazir Bhutto at the time of her assassination in 2007 despite being aware of threats to her life.

An anti-terrrorsim court conducting the trial of seven persons accused of involvement in the assassination has declared Musharraf a "proclaimed offender" or fugitive.
