London Underground (LU) drivers protesting the dismissal of a union activist ended the first of four strikes early today.

The  strike, which started at 9 pm local time yesterday was scheduled to end at 3 am today, according to Geoff Martin, a spokesman for the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union.

The plan included all union members who drive trains on the city's subway system, known as the tube.

It was the first of four strikes set to be carried out through the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London, the first of which started today and the last to be held on 3 July.

The RMT counts 80,000 transportation workers as its members.

Meanwhile, according to Transport for London, the city agency managing transportation services in London, it expects little disruption to today's services, reports in the media citing unidentified sources said.
