Government slaps safeguard duty of up to 30 per cent on aluminium products from China

The government has imposed safeguard duty ranging up to 30 per cent on import of certain key aluminium products from China, in a bid to protect domestic industry from cheap imports.
Import of aluminium flat sheets from China, primarily used by sectors such as auto and construction, will invite 12-14 per cent duty while import of aluminium foils, mainly used by the packaging industry, will attract duty of 25-30 per cent, the revenue department said in a notification.
The duty, leviable for two years, would be effective retrospectively from 23 March 2009.
"Increased import of aluminium flat rolled products and aluminium foil into India from the People's Republic of China had caused and threatened to cause market disruption to domestic industry," the revenue department notification said.
"This had necessitated the imposition of provisional safeguard duty on import," the notification added.
